that show is terrible

I think it must be a golden rule that whoever watches the show How I Met Your Mother must also tune into The Big Bang Theory. Most people I’ve met watch the two avidly. It doesn’t really matter since both are horrendous. The thing that bugs me about both shows is that it seems as if the males on the show don’t act like real guys. (same thing with Friends after the first couple seasons). Both shows have mostly male writers that must be experts in creating characters of what-they-think-women-think-men should act like. Make sense? Feel free to agree with me on this.

  1. You are way off base here.

I am sorry that the main male characters aren't killing polar bears on an island that floats around mysteriously; or that the characters aren't CIA agents playing their lives out one hour at a time. This show (big bang theory) is a TV sitcom, it is meant to portray stereotypical character-types and deal with issues in a cartoon-like manner. That is what they do - no more, no less.

If anything, after the first two 'Friends' seasons the characters actually started settling into their roles. I can guarantee you that diehard 'friends' fans prefer the last five seasons in contrast to the first five.

These simple sitcom characters make it much easier for new viewers to understand these shows. You automatically understand a characters back stories without having to see a few seasons worth of flash backs to understand who they are (*cough* lost *cough*).

Moreover, given that both these shows (friends and big bang theory) do not require you to view the episode previous (unlike shows you have to see all 5 seasons of to semi-understand what is happening...) to get what is going on; the characters make it easier for episodes to stand alone.

Watching one episode does not entitle you to make such sweeping criticisms. Watch a season and then get back to me.

    Enjoy your baseball,

  2. dear loyal reader,
thank you for your response however your arguments are actually my points. the fact that you can tune into the show and automatically know everything about the characters and pick it up within 5 minutes proves how mindless that show is. (example: i know geeks love star trek, halo... the nerds on the big bang theory do love these things so why would i want to watch something that i can expect? how does that further any real plot? a character like sam malone or george costanza is actually more complex than that thus a better show is created).

also, what does 'the character started settling into their roles' mean? thats a very odd phrase.

and yes, ive watched more than one episode of each show before i criticized.

and false, friends did not get better in the later seasons.i remember thinking, did they really need cheap laughs by introducing a pet monkey?

also, the shots at lost are dully noted. that show pisses more people off than tiger woods coverage.

  3. If I wanted to force my self to think in order to watch a television show I would watch the discovery channel.

And in regards to the 'friends' comment. I am implying that the characters roles were becoming more rigid. By doing this, viewers would be better able to connect with one particular character (the vamp, the hero, the anti-hero, the jokester, and the sorceress, etc.).

And Survivor. For a reality TV show it sure reminds me of Big Bang Theory. I mean, the contestants all fall into 1-dimensional roles (Coach, Parvety, Russell, etc.) and compete in pointless contests of strength. Sort of like nerds in 1-dimensional roles competing in pointless nerdy events.

television is an escapist medium. forcing viewers to stress over outlandish plots is counter-intuitive. I do not watch television to think more, i watch it to think less.

  4. 1. referring to my original post. how would i connect to the guys on friends exactly when they dont act like real guys at all?

    2. survivor trumps any show because it is the best show on television.

    3. escapist medium? jack bauer kills fools like you.

    4. nothing is wrong with the discovery channel. i saw an episode of mythbusters last week and they made a candle outta earwax. suck it chaddyfi.
